Pro Kiter Jasmine Cho – Recovering from an ACL Operation

One of our favourite Big Kite girls Jasmine Cho inspired us with her tenacity, when year after year she submitted an application to participate in Red Bull’s King of the Air, even though there was not a dedicated section for women. Everything changed in December when for the first time ever, the women’s division of KOTA, saw Jasmine take to the air and show the world her incredible talent.

Sadly, last week Jasmine shared with the world that she had torn her ACL and had undergone reconstructive surgery. The good news is that the surgery went well and it’s clear that the Big Air community and her family are supporting her through this. In a candid video about her injury, Jasmine shared with us that “it all happened so quickly. A lesson learnt is that you can be doing everything in your power, I was gymming, running, exercising, eating healthy and I was in full athlete mode and sometimes life just throws some crazy stuff your way.” I appreciate how honest Jasmine is about how hard this is for her, and that despite being an incredible pro kiter, she is not naturally a positive person but she has a powerful support system.

Research has shown us that women have ACL injuries eight times more than men, and the number of female athletes who have ACL tears is up to 6 times higher than male athletes. Reconstructive surgery for an ACL is a big deal, with surgery requiring ligament reconstruction through the use of your own hamstring or hamstring fibres. I had the same surgery a few years ago and it’s a long road to recovery. But with support and patience, the journey works out, yet it’s tough and although I was playing competitive netball at the time I was not a pro athlete. So, I’m wishing Jasmine all the best as she recovers, may she get all the rest and all the assistance she needs in this challenging season. Kiting is such a pure love for Jasmine Cho and no doubt she will be back to participate in the sport she loves. Get well soon Jasmine!
